New Year, New Habits: Setting Fun Family Goals

The start of a new year is the perfect time to reflect, reset, and create healthy habits that benefit the whole family. For parents with small children, January offers a fresh opportunity to establish routines that support well-being, learning, and family connection. Here’s how to make those goals fun and achievable:

  1. Start with a Family Conversation

Gather everyone for a short, positive discussion about what they’d like to accomplish this year. Encourage each child to share one personal goal, such as reading more books, learning a new skill, or spending more time outdoors. When kids feel involved, they’re more likely to stay motivated.

  1. Focus on Small, Sustainable Changes

Instead of aiming for big, overwhelming resolutions, break goals into smaller steps. For example:

  • Healthy Eating: Add one extra fruit or vegetable to meals each day.
  • Physical Activity: Include 5-minute movement breaks throughout the day (you can go to the park, walk around the neighborhood or dance in the living room!).
  • Screen Time: Set clear limits and replace some screen time with crafts or creative projects.
  1. Create a Visual Reminder

Use a family calendar, whiteboard or goal chart to track progress. Kids love seeing their achievements! Stickers or colorful markers can make it fun and engaging.

  1. Prioritize Balance

Remember, goals should enhance family life, not create stress. If a plan isn’t working, adjust it. Flexibility is key to long-term success.

  1. Celebrate Together

Recognize progress with simple rewards, like a family movie night or a special outing. Celebrating together reinforces positive habits and keeps motivation high.

The goal of this activity is to help everyone (even the little ones!) in the family take a step back to look at their current habits and what they want to improve, so that they can make better everyday choices. And as with most things, kids will follow your lead, so the most powerful habit you can model is consistency. When parents lead by example, kids naturally follow.

Good luck setting your New Year Goals!
