Instead of throwing old paper away, we can turn it into something new and amazing: recycled paper. It’s like being a superhero for the planet, and it’s fun too!

Papermaking screen full of pulp

Gather your tools:

  • Old paper (newspaper, magazines, construction paper)
  • Bowl
  • Baking Pan
  • Water
  • Blender (optional)
  • Screen (window screen, mesh fabric)
  • Towel
  • Flat surface (tray, baking sheet)
  • Decorations (dried flowers, seeds, paper shapes)

Let’s get pulpy!

  1. Shred the paper: Tear or rip your old paper into small pieces.
  2. Soak it up: Fill the bowl with water and add your paper shreds. Let it soak for at least 2 hours, or even overnight. The paper will become soft and mushy.
  3. Blend it smooth (optional):If you have a grown-up helper, they can use a blender to make it super mushy! Add some water from the bowl and blend until you have a smooth, soupy mixture.
  4. Screen time! Place the screen over a baking pan. Use a spoon or ladle to scoop up some of the papery water and spread it evenly over the screen, letting the water drain into the baking pan.
  5. Become a paper sculptor: Gently shake the screen to spread the paper mixture evenly. At this point, you can add fun decorations like dried flowers, confetti or paper shapes. Get creative and make your paper unique!
  6. Squeeze out the water: Place a towel on your flat surface. Carefully flip the screen upside down onto the towel. Press gently to squeeze out as much water as possible.
  7. Drying time! Peel the paper off the screen and lay it flat on the towel. Leave it in a warm, dry place for 24-48 hours. Be patient!

Ta-da! You’ve made your own recycled paper! Once your paper is dry, use it to write a secret message, draw a picture, or even make a card for someone special. Remember, you made this amazing paper all by yourself! High five, eco-hero!
